This is my last post, which is dedicated to the projects of Future Cities. Now I’d like to tell you about three projects. Two of them are incredibly beautiful, in my opinion. But I consider them to be a little utopian. And the third project isn’t utopian because Puerto-Ricans have already started its realization.

The Puerto – Rican city San Juan is one more city without cars. But, unlike Great City and Masdar, this city isn’t created from scratch, it is reconstructed.
The city authorities, concerned about impetuous reduction of population size, have invested 1,5 million dollars in urban renewal. Their main task is to refuse cars and create the most beautiful pedestrian zones.

Shang-Sui is the Chinese Future City. The MAD Architects Studio is creating the project of this Future city. The idea of honoring waters and mountains in China forms the basis of the project.
Shang-Sui is the city with a large number of multipurpose skyscrapers. In each of them inhabitants and guests will be able to use scores of public places with wildlife pieces for quiet rest and contemplation.
The authors of the project consider that high compact planning is the thing of the future. This is because the high compact planning will allow reaching any point on foot without effort, by bicycle or public transport.

Today I’d like to tell you about the Arabian projects. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the cities of contrasts, where the wealth and luxury verge on poverty and survival, beauty contradicts plainness, green oases are found side by side with torrid desert. However, Arab countries always impress us with the architectural concepts. Let’s look at their projects of the Future Cities.

Masdar in the United Arab Emirates is the city without cars and skyscrapers. Today Masdar is already being built from scratch in the center of the desert near Abu Dhabi.
Its main feature is independence from traditional power sources. Masdar will receive energy from the sun, wind and geothermal sources. Thus, Masdar will become the first city with zero carbon emissions.
In this Future City high emphasis will be paid to high-speed public transport. Giant «sunflowers» will cover streets from the day heat, and the energy saved up by them will be used only at night.

Dubai is one more city in the United Arab Emirates, which will be able to satisfy the requirements of the Future City completely. Specialists of the Baharash Architecture Company created the project, in which they used the main world achievements in the eco-construction.
Their project includes 550 comfortable villas, educational institutions and organic farms. Energy for all of these will be produced by 200 square kilometers of solar panels. The major principles for the “green” city will be the principles of ecology and simplicity of social interaction.

In the previous post I spoke about the projects, which have already been realized or planned to be realized. In this post I’d like to talk about the projects, which are in a stage of development. In my opinion, they are the most utopian and original projects.

The competition ReThink Athens was urged to find the project, which will allow rethinking the center of the antique city completely and will make it quieter and cleaner.
The winner of this competition was the project, which suggested refusing motor transport and filling the center of Athens with green zones for creation of more comfortable conditions for foot walks.

The NeoTax project became one of the most original projects of the competition eVolo 2011 Skyscraper Competition. Its main idea is construction of houses not only up, but right and left above the trees.

In the John Wardle Architects it was supposed what the Australian Melbourne can look like in 100 years time. Their Multiplicity project shows a huge megalopolis growing not only in breadth, but also up and down.
Underground and air ways will be used to move around the Future Melbourne. Over the city there will be a transparent “roof” created for cultivating food, collecting water and solar energy.

What is city of the future”? What should it look like? These and many other questions are asked by writers, designers, engineers and architects. Any contemporary project of the future city includes many aspects. For example, environmental issues, simplicity of movement, efficient use of space and maximum comfort for people.
When I was surfing the Net in search of interesting projects of the future cities, I came across a set of unique projects, presented on www.qwrt.ru. Some projects are only at the stage of development, but the others are already being built.
Today I’d like to tell you about two of them.

Probably, the most difficult task is to build a city, where people can move around without cars. The government of China decided to meet the challenge and approved the project of the city without cars called “Great City”.
Great City is being built in the countryside near Chengdu. 80.000 inhabitants, who will live in the city, will be able to move around the city on foot or by bicycle.
The unique planning of the city will allow going without cars completely. The houses will be placed in the center of Great City and offices and administrative buildings will be around. Walking from the center to an external ring will take 10 minutes.
According to the project, the Chinese city of the future will consume 58% less water and 47% less electric power. It will have 89% less waste than the conventional cities of similar size.

Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture bureau considers that compact planning is the main criterion of the city of the future and wants to create a ‘Super Sustainable City’.
Specialists of the bureau suggest turning Swedish city Gothenburg into the City of the Future. According to the project plan, compact planning, using roofs for gardens placement, solar batteries and windmills should satisfy all food and energy needs of the inhabitants.

Other projects presented on the site are also very interesting, I will write about them a bit later.
