Picture "Internet"

New Media on The Internet
Have you ever tried to imagine what the Internet looks like? How it can be represented? British artist Benjamin Redford made a sketch depicting what the Internet is.

Last year in December the artist created “Internetopia” – a crowdsourcing product in which 220 people made their contributions. The British artist supposes that today this is the biggest work of art which was created with crowdsourcing.

“Crowdsourcing is the solution of problems of any complexity and character using wisdom of millions of people” — German Gref, Sberbank of Russia. In my opinion, this definition of crowdsourcing is the most simple and exact.

You can look at «the global village» here.

About the Book: Social Media Is Bullshit!

New Media on The Internet
There is a huge number of books which extol social media and tell us only about their power. Quite recently I came across the book by Brendon J. Mendelson called «Social Media is Bullshit!»
The name of this book is discouraging, isn’t it? Everyone is used to thinking that social media is the most powerful tool capable of everything and suitable for any purpose. But journalist and public critic Brendon J. Mendelson destroys this myth. He shows why social media are so popular and who really benefits from this myth.

This is a witty, unprejudiced and critical consideration of all the fuss over the social networks accompanied by facts, figures and quotations.
The book will be interesting for everyone!

Media and Development

New Media on The Internet
From charitable donations and delivering public health messages to promoting democratic participation and state accountability, the media can play an important role in development. It can also be used as a mechanism of control and supervision or to disseminate hate speech and propaganda.

How then should we respond to the growing importance of the media? The first step is to acquire an informed and critical understanding of the multiple roles that the media can have in development. This book provides concise and original introductions to the study and practice of communication for development, media development and media representations of development. Also it highlights the increasing importance of the media, whilst at the same time emphasizing the varieties, complexities and contingencies of its role in social change.

The broad and interdisciplinary focus of this book will make it attractive to anyone with an interest in media, communication, development, politics and social change.

Error: Glitch, Noise, and Jam in New Media Cultures

New Media on The Internet
“Error” brings together established critics and emerging voices to offer a significant contribution to the field of new media studies.

The book is divided into three sections: Hack, Game and Jam. In the first section contributors explore the ways in which errors, glitches and failure provide opportunities for critical and aesthetic intervention within new media practices. In the second section they examine how errors allow for intentional and accidental co-opting of rules and protocols toward unintended ends. The final section, «Jam,» considers the role of error as both an inherent «counterstrategy» and a mode of tactical resistance within a network society.

The book offers a brilliant collection of essays for those who are interested in new media and want to widen the scope in this field.
